About us

The National Heritage Institute of the Czech Republic, functions under the authority of the Czech law on national monument care (law no. 20/87 incl. recent addenda) as a professional organization of national monument care with nation-wide activities. The organization is divided into the central office in Prague and regional offices in individual districts.

The Regional Department of České Budějovice is responsible for all legislatively-established activities directed towards the proper care of cultural monuments and historically protected areas in the South Bohemian district. These activities can be divided into two basic groups - the care of publically accessible state-owned castles, and the care of monuments in private ownership and administration.

The field of effective monument care includes in particular the preparation of professional statements on urbanistic and constructional modifications of monuments as well as their restoration, research, survey, evidence, and documentation. Professional service is also provided for historic gardens, parks, and cultural landscapes as well as certain activities concerning the archeology of historical monuments. Recently, various specialized activities have been developed to present the merits of historical monuments to a wide spectrum of the public (lectures, educational programs, exhibitions, publications, etc.).

A particularly significant part of the presentation of historical monuments is the operation of state castles. Public visitors' routes in these castles offer an ever more comprehensive picture of the everyday life and historic development of individual periods and buildings. Numerous other activities, particularly inventorial projects with historical items capturing an exceptionally valuable part of our national cultural treasure, are presently under development on site with the cooperation of historical specialists.
